Vapours is the third studio album by Montreal-based Indie band, Islands. The 2006 debut, Return to the Sea, found eccentric and mellifluous pop tunes performed with a cast of characters from Montreal’s thriving music scene (including members of Arcade Fire and Wolf Parade), helmed by Nick Diamonds and Jamie Thompson. Thompson departed amicably from the group shortly after the album was released, and 2007′s Arm’s Way found the band turning in a new direction towards lushly orchestrated, guitar-driven prog-rock. Thompson has returned to the band for Vapours, a record that flits back and forth between moody synthesizers and drum-machine-heavy beats, while remaining firmly rooted in the classic pop sensibilities and multitude of melodic hooks that Islands is known for.

Produced by Nick Diamonds and Chris Coady (who has worked with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead, TV On The Radio, among others), this is the group’s most stunning work to date.

Do Make Say Think – Other Truths (2009) (Prog Rock,Post Rock) (Rapidshare,Depositfiles,Hotfile)

September 17th, 2009

1 Do
2 Make
3 Say
4 Think

The sixth full-length from Do Make Say Think defiantly features four long-form tracks, three of which clock in at over 10 minutes, and all of which trace the inimitable musical arcs that have made this band justly celebrated for their unique sonic palette and vibrant distillation of compositional forms and influences into some of the past decade?s most consistently rich and rewarding instrumental rock.

Bucking the trend towards diminishing attention spans, immediate gratification, snappy digital singles and things that go ?pop? right out of the gate, DMST admirably stick to their roots and allow the vines that spring from their fertile musical garden to wind, curl and climb for as long as required. More than ever, the players keep their heads down, creating wonderful multi-movement instrumental works (with the occasional mantric or wordless vocal passage, courtesy guest singers The Akron Family and Lullabye Arkestra), overflowing with attention to tone and timbre, animated by unfussy yet ornate harmony, melody and polyrhythm, shot through with ineffable soul. The four songs on Other Truths are vintage Do Make Say Think, and the album represents the first time since the band?s debut (recorded over a dozen years ago) that they have found themselves with an entire collection of songs that unfold so organically over long duration. As testament to the unfettered evolution of these tunes, the band has titled them simply ?Do?, ?Make?, ?Say? and ?Think?.

Do Make Say Think has always managed to gather, balance and synthesise various poles simultaneously ? ragged/precise, dirty/clean, atmospheric/ stratospheric ? forging sonic narratives that combine broad strokes and clusters of detail. Perhaps more than their overtly ?post-modern? commingling of various musical genres (psych, jazz, dub, folk) this less conspicuous, indefinable ability to maintain such a consistently enthralling fusion of instincts is the true mark of the band, yielding a music that sounds and feels so unforced, natural and human. Certainly a key part of this unquantifiable equation is the band?s self-production, which has shaped their sound from the beginning, and grown along with it. Led by Ohad Benchetrit and his home studio Th? Schvitz in Toronto, along with Charles Spearin and Justin Small, DMST has developed a canny and novel toolbox of recording and mixing techniques that contributes significantly to their sonic identity.

Ultimately it is tricky to distill what has made DMST so compelling to so many critics and fans over their 13-year history, but inarguably something beyond the sum of its parts has always sparkled through their music, an amalgam of many elements that seem present all at once, on every song and through every album: cerebral, emotional, atmospheric, visceral, cosmic, pastoral, synthetic, organic, meditative, ecstatic. Other Truths rallies them all once again, in new and dynamic ways, bearing the distinct imprint of the band?s sound ? a brilliant addition to the band?s canon.

Other Truths is available on CD in a custom gatefold cardstock jacket and in a first pressing on deluxe 180gLP that includes a limited edition poster (unique to the LP package), an artwork insert printed on heavyweight translucent paper and a CD copy of the album all packed in a thick 24pt. paperboard record jacket. The album is also available digitally.

Kaleidoscope is the fourth studio album by Dutch trance artist Tiësto, to be released on October 6, 2009. (see 2009 in music). The album contains collaborations with Nelly Furtado, Emily Haines of Metric, Tegan and Sara, Jónsi of Sigur Rós, Kele Okereke of Bloc Party, and Calvin Harris among others. The album also features a song with Sneaky Sound System which is the first single “I Will Be Here”.

Probably the most massively overhyped release by any DJ in 2009 was the debut album by N.A.S.A, The Spirit of Apollo, which turned out to be a ridiculously unpleasant mess of sonic overreaching, due substantially to the massive number of collaborations stuffed into the album. The number of collaborations on Dutch DJ Tiësto’s Kaleidoscope is certainly enough to get your attention, but doesn’t really come close to the calamity that N.A.S.A. dove into. For one thing, Tiësto obviously has enough good sense to restrict disparate collaborators to individual tracks, instead of forcing them together like some unholy peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

With a few pop-stoner guitar riffs, some witty bass lines, a spot-on set of
skins, one piano, several horns, and a lap slide guitar, It’s Elephant’s will
blow your mind. Literally. (Okay, maybe not literally.)

This four piece doesn’t allow their ambitions to get in the way of their
unbridled enthusiasm for making full, heady, and downright lovable music

Band members include Brent Jay (The Letters Organize), Garrett Range (The
Letters Organize), David Fountain (Wighat) and Justin Shotwell (Charlie
Hustle). Jay and Range left The Letters Organize, a band that Dave Grohl once
named as one of his favorite up-and-coming bands, after a seven year run and
a international tour with The Offspring, and formed It’s Elephant’s out of
its ashes, recruiting Fountain on backing vocals and guitar. They later added
Shotwell to complete the band

Shannon Mcnally – Coldwater (2009) (Rock) (Rapidshare)

2. Jack B. Nimble
3. Lonesome, Ornery and Mean
4. Lovely
5. Bohemian Wedding Song
6. Freedom To Stay
7. Bolder Than Paradise
8. Positively 4th Street

Coldwater’ is Shannon McNally’s 10th album (or so – it depends on how you count). She recorded it with her traveling band Hot Sauce -they are based out of Northern Mississipp. It was recorded at the late, great Jim Dickinson’s Zebra Ranch Studio in Coldwater, Mississippi. Who knows how she got there. She was born in NY. Anyways this album was recorded in two days, four if you count mixing. It is the follow up to her highly successful ‘Geronimo’ album, produced by Charlie Sexton. The band includes Jake Fussell, Eric Deaton and Wallace Lester. it’s basically true to their live set. Shannon is most often compared to most of the iconic female Americana artists such as Bonnie Raitt, Stevie Nicks, Emmy Lou Harris and Lucinda Williams. She personally counts JJ Cale, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson and The Allman Brothers as principle influences as well as the aforementioned women. She borrowed songs from Waylon Jennings and Bob Dylan as well as herself, for this particular record. Please visit ‘ShannonMcNally.com’ for more information about Shannon and her music.
